On their excellent debut, Public Figures seem to have it all figured out

On their first EP, Melbourne’s Public Figures deliver six punk rock tracks so refined, so tight and hooky, that you’d be mistaken thinking they were veterans. Clocking in at 13 minutes, Figure It Out is a project that will fly by you, and all you’ll wanna do is run it back.

Landed In A Trap doesn’t even take up a minute and a half of your time, but lands one of the catchiest choruses on the project, with a fun, breakneck delivery.
It’s all gas no brakes—the two singers will even talk over each other, delivering two completely separate verses, to avoid sitting still, as is the case in Honeycomb,
an ode to the working life. The EP’s standout track is the opener, Cut It Out, a blistering prayer for deliverance from someone that simply won’t shut up. Its repetitive call to action is sure to be a standout moment in their live sets.

Closing track How I’m Feeling builds up gradually to create a great sense of propulsion, with the tense line “My blood is rushing and I’m bleeding out” delivered with a biting urgency and flamboyance from both singers, Evie Vlah and Gigi Argiro. Working in tandem, their voices compliment each other excellently. Their relative straightforward singing styles make for a departure from some of Australia’s most prominent punk rockers—a far cry from the grating (but lovable, hilarious) timbre of Eamon Sandwith from the Chats, and the whimsical, cheeky stylings of Amy Taylor from Amyl and the Sniffers.

Public Figures maintain the same level of passion as their brilliant contemporaries, despite their sound coming in a far more accessible package. It makes Figure It Out one of the most versatile punk rock records I’ve heard come out of Australia recently, and solidifies the quartet as one of the most exciting voices in the already vibrant Melbourne scene.
